Just at the time when the issue of South China Sea is drawing global attention, a new book named The Exploration of Nansha Islands has been launched by People’s Daily Publishing House recently, systematically explaining the origin of this issue and those departed disputes of China with its neighbors, and it closely reveals the current condition of the Nansha Islands and the living status of Chinese troops guarding there. Telling about the history and present situation of the islands, this book is the first one to record interviews with officers and soldiers stationed there. It compiles the historical data on People’s Daily during the 60 years or so, guiding its readers to have a more comprehensive understanding of these islands. It arouses its readers’ awareness of national defense, especially that of the ocean and territory, and inspires them with patriotism, represented as the encyclopedia of Nanhai issues.
Recently, the issues of South China Sea, that of Nanhai included, have caught the attention of the whole world, especially the Chinese. However, not many people know clearly that what is the core of the issues, Nansha issues in particular. For instance, why it is that “China has unchallengeable sovereignty over Nansha Islands and the waters nearby”? What disputes China once had with its neighbors? And what is the status quo of those islands? To answer these heated questions, Si Xiong, the advanced editor of People’s Daily, as a senior media man, has sorted out all the data about those islands on People’s Daily since it started publication, and has collected international treaties, historical document, governmental memorandum, diplomatic statements, white books, and so on, to give explanations on the origin of these issues and the causes and effects of China’s disputes with its neighbors, from the perspective of diplomacy, military and legislation. He has also attended those islands for interviews, and has presented the current condition of the islands and the living status of Chinese troops guarding there in forms of diaries and interview records, to discover the inner feelings of officers and soldiers. His work has portrayed a lively and vivid picture of the guards on those islands, who are really touching, and has made a vow to confirm their confidence and determination of protecting, constructing and developing the Nansha Islands.
Besides texts, this book also has valuable pictures about the Nansha issues, together with nearly 100 photos of the islands and the troops. Its preface was written by Major General Yinan Jin, who is also a professor and director of the Strategic Studies Institute in National Defense University, and was strongly recommended by him.
