High density lipoprotein (HDL) has anti-atherogenic effects and may act as a scavenger that removes cholesterol from arterial wall cells. The synthesis of apolipoprotein A-lecithin-cholesterol complex has recently been reported, and its physicochemical properties resemble natural HDL.
