Since humans have historical records, copper and its complexes are used as drugs. Copper is a necessary metal element of the body. The body’s normal metabolic processes require them, but they can not be synthesized in vivo and, therefore, require daily intake and absorption from the diet. Biopharmacologists and researchers have made a great deal of effort to thoroughly understand the role of copper and its complexes in biological systems in the hope of gaining more information for the prevention and treatment of human diseases. This review reviews the copper distribution and metabolism in tissues, copper-dependent enzymes, abnormal copper metabolism in pathological conditions, the pharmacological activity of copper complexes and the inhibition of oxygen free radical production.
