近年来,在接入网上使用ATM技术以提供视频广播、远程教学以及数据通信等多种业务的趋势越来越明显。在无源光网络(无源的光接入网)上使用ATM,不仅可以利用光纤的巨大带宽提供宽带服务,也可以利用ATM进行高效的带宽业务管理。自1993年以来,许多国家都竞相开始研究ATM-PON技术及其应用,并认为ATM-PON是最有前途的、能以较低成本提供宽带接入的方案。
In recent years, there has been a growing trend of using ATM technologies in the access network to provide diversified services such as video broadcasting, distance learning and data communications. The use of ATM over passive optical networks (passive optical access networks) not only provides broadband services using the enormous bandwidth of optical fibers, but also makes efficient use of ATM for bandwidth management. Since 1993, many countries are competing to start researching ATM-PON technology and its applications, and consider ATM-PON as the most promising solution for providing broadband access at a lower cost.
