追怀统计学发展的历史,在庞博浩繁、千头万绪的史料中,探索其源流与进程,有利于我们总结历史经验,继承科学遗产,为今后我国统计理论建设提供参考与借鉴。 任何科学的产生都有其社会背景,其发展都与其它相关科学的发展有密切关系。同时还应看到任何科学的发展有其阶段性。关于统计学的产生与发展问题,历来有不同的看法,争论一直持续到今天。笔者以为统计学作为一门科学,从其发展过程考察,可以划分为三个时期(阶段),即古典统计学时期、近代统计学时期和现代统计学时期。
