Amber from Kachin,Myanmar offers a unique window into mid-Cretaceous ecosystems because it provides large sample sets that span a wide range of taxa preserved in exquisite detail at approximately 99 Ma[1].A fringe benefit of such extensive sam-pling is that inclusions rarely captured in other amber deposits are represented in Kachin amber-even subaquatic taxa.Recent studies have documented inclusions of fully marine groups, such as ammonites[2]and bivalves[3];many of the amber pieces also bear surface borings from pholadid bivalves,or rare encrustations of crinoids, corals,or bivalves[3].In addition to the terrestrial insects represented in the deposit, there are also numerous taxa closely associated with freshwater habitats. This mixed assem-blage has suggested that Kachin amber represents multiple habi-tats,but that the amber-producing forest was predominantly growing within a marginal marine setting.A cupressaceous forest is thought to have produced the resin in a mangrove-like setting[1],with the resulting amber deposit accumulated in a nearshore marine environment, such as a bay or estuary[4].
