West Germany has a pleasant summer climate and its air conditioning is neither developed nor popular compared to the United States. Corresponding human comfort research started late. Frank, one of the earliest West German scholars involved in the field, believes that human comfort is a broader issue. There are 21 factors that affect it alone (see photo). However, research to date indicates that only six factors play a major role in the thermal comfort environment. This is the environment-related dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, and average radiation temperature of the envelope structure; human-related metabolic rate and clothing . The remaining factors are secondary, or so far only speculation. As far as the comfort study itself is concerned, it involves how people need a thermal environment, how to evaluate a given thermal environment, and how to determine the principles of environmental thermal analysis.
