Magnetoresistive RAM, as an alternative to mainstream memory, is gaining momentum and attracting the attention of the industry and some governments and receiving investment support from both. Altis Semiconductor, one of the makers behind MRAM, said it hopes to become the first company to mass-produce MRAM next year. The company is a joint venture between IBM Microelectronics and Infineon, Germany, with 50% each. Companies involved in this MRAM R & D competition include Japan’s NEC, South Korea’s Samsung Electronics, Japan’s Sony, Japan’s Toshiba, MRAM’s main developer Motorola, and Taiwan’s Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC). Motorola plans to release its MRAM product plan later this year. MRAM backers think of it as next-generation memory because
