心室功能分析是评价某些心脏疾病严重性的基础.用侵入性的血液动力学检查和血管造影可测定左室功能的各项参数.鉴于使无症状或症状轻微的病人经受这些操作的危险性,或使某一病人反复进行侵入性检查,均不切实际,于是发展了用非侵入性技术来估价心室功能.超声心动图是这些非侵入性技术之一,包括M型、两维和多普勒超声心动图.M型和两维超声心动图可用于测量心室腔大小、形状和室壁的厚度,而多普勒超声心动图则可用来估价血流的性质、方向和速度.

Type M and two-dimensional echocardiography can be used to measure the size, shape, and wall thickness of a ventricle, while Doppler echocardiography can be used to assess the nature, direction, and velocity of blood flow.
