Objective To evaluate the protective effect of vitamin D supplementation on osteoarthritis (OA) by naked eyes and light microscopy after HE staining. Methods Thirty Wistar rats aged 15 to 20 weeks old were randomly divided into three groups (n = 10), which were control group (CTL group), experimental group NV group and SV group. Articular cartilage (control group) and knee joint cartilage of OA rats in the experimental group were observed by naked eyes, and pelvisier Jp score and Mankin score were observed. Results Compared with SV group, the synovial hyperemia and edema in NV group were accompanied with varying degrees of hyperplasia, the synovial fluid was cloudy, the appearance of cartilage lost its original luster, the surface was rough, the integrity of cartilage was destroyed and the damage of femoral condyle cartilage was worse than that of SV group Increase. Conclusion Vitamin D can protect cartilage injury during the development of OA
