鸭嘴笔是用两片叶片組合而成,叶片的形状能决定笔的整个质量,它的形式如图1所示。叶片的尖端应該呈椭圓形,如图2所示。如果叶片的头部太尖,則墨汁在中間成了上弧形,这样就难画出墨綫,如图3所示。但是如图4所示的形状就划出粗綫条,墨汁流得快,結果在綫条的尾端会有过多的墨汁流出弄成一团,象这样的鸭嘴笔就不能使用了。鴨嘴笔经使用后要磨損变鈍,图5是一支磨損的笔。鸭嘴笔是不是用鈍了,辨別的方法有两种:一种是划出来的綫条較粗,不能划細线;另一种是将笔拿在手上轉动,从笔的一边轉过尖端时看是否有反光出現,假如在所有方向上能够看到反光,說明这支笔用鈍了,因为从叶片尖端的点已經磨損到产生了面,所以就出現反光。
