There is a significant amount of woodland in Asia that can manage and conserve carbon. This will include the construction of 133 million hm 2 of plantations and agroforestry systems to mitigate the deforestation of 33.5 million hm 2 tropical forests and the natural and tending renewal of 48 million hm 2 tropical forests. According to conservative estimates, by 2050, the potential for preserving and fixing carbon in these lands is 24 PgC (1 Pg = 10 ~ (15) g). Plantation and agroforestry systems account for 58% of the mitigation potential of forest carbon emissions in Asia. Assuming the current state of affairs remains unchanged, by 2050 all forestry activities will be able to conserve and fix carbon equivalent to 4% of the total carbon emissions of global fossil fuel emissions during the same period. Estimates of mitigation potential are subject to significant uncertainty, especially estimates of the available land area for silviculture and the rate of deforestation. While estimating the potential for mitigation of global carbon emissions, various uncertainties may be combined into a single major error, but the scope of this error is not yet known. Here is an example of a Chinese forestry project that is mainly intended to restore degraded land and to provide biomass to local farmers. This case shows that the mitigation of fixed carbon and carbon emissions is an added benefit of traditional forest use. This forest project in China is slowing CO 2 emissions (about 1.4 MgC / hm 2 · a) and the current reduction of carbon emissions could quadruple if management measures are improved.
