Large specimens of A2, S7, H13 and O1 steels were quenched in three inert gases from a vacuum furnace with varying cooling capabilities. The results show that most standard tool steels are hardened to large parts in a standard vacuum furnace. In recent years, Solar Atmosphere (Commercial Heat Treatment Subsidiary of Vacuum Furnace Systems) conducted a series of tests to determine the hardenability of large tool steel in an inert gas in a vacuum furnace. The quenching tests were carried out on the large test pieces of A2 cold die steel, S7 chromium-molybdenum hot work die steel, H13 chromium-molybdenum-vanadium hot-work die steel and O1 oil quenched tool steel, respectively.
