The purpose of this study was to determine the quality and quantity of energy needed to produce freshwater on various US Navy ships and to explore ways to reduce the energy consumption. Energy consumption values were calculated based on the existing ship heat balance and distillation unit technical manuals. The impact of ship operation on distiller economics is determined by the profile of ship, conversion efficiency of electricity, boiler efficiency and availability of auxiliary steam turbine. The results of the analysis indicate that freshwater production accounts for about 2% of the total energy consumption on board the ship, which equates to a fleet of $ 22 million annually in fuel costs. The reason for the energy consumption of up to 434 British thermal units per pound of freshwater is the low energy conversion efficiency and low boiler efficiency. The distiller design emphasizes weight and reliability over fuel savings. Effective ways to reduce the total energy consumption of freshwater production are: reuse of wastewater, reduction of water consumption, study of more effective desalination methods, improvement of power conversion and boiler efficiency, analysis of existing ship operation and diary of ship navigation, It is possible to determine more accurately the range of reduced storage water.
