胆碱能神经系统参与镇痛功能。有人认为拟胆碱药物的镇痛作用是中枢性的,将乙酰胆碱与毒扁豆碱同时注入脑室能够获得镇痛效应,提示脑室周围结构可能是胆碱能药物镇痛作用的中枢部位。隔核位于室周,有不少实验证实它对痛觉有调制作用,是脑内电刺激镇痛和吗啡镇痛的作用部位之一。形态学研究显示隔核内有丰富的胆碱能细胞体和神经纤维。
