西部大开发战略是以江泽民同志为核心的党中央根据邓小平同志关于我国现代化建设“两个大局”的战略思想，高瞻远瞩、统揽全局，面向新世纪作出的重大决策。这是我国进行经济结构战略性调整，促进地区经济协调发展的重大部署，是扩大国内需求，促进国民经济的续快速健康发展的重大举措，是增进民族团结，保持社会稳和巩固边防的保证，是逐步缩小地区差距，最终实现共同富裕的必然要求。实施西部大开发这个战略决策，不仅对于振兴中西部地区经济，而且对于促进21世纪中国经济更大的发展、实现我国现代化长远发展的宏伟目标，都将起到极大的推动作用。那么，应该如何看待西部大开发？如何实现西部地区的大发展？本期特编发以下4篇文章，希望能引起广大读者对西部开发问题的关注，并欢迎大家踊跃投稿，参与讨论。
The strategy of developing the western region is based on Comrade Deng Xiaoping’s strategic thinking of “two situations” of our country’s modernization drive with the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Jiang Zemin as the core. It takes great foresight, grand overalling and major policy decisions in the new century. This is a major measure for our country to make strategic adjustments to the economic structure and promote the coordinated development of the regional economy. It is a major measure to expand domestic demand and promote the sustained, rapid and healthy development of the national economy. It is a pledge to enhance national unity, maintain social stability and consolidate frontier defense. It is a necessary requirement for gradually narrowing the gap between regions and finally realizing common prosperity. The implementation of this strategic decision for the development of the western region will play a significant role in promoting not only the economy in the central and western regions, but also the grand goal of promoting the greater development of the Chinese economy in the 21st century and realizing the long-term development of our country’s modernization. So, what should we think of the western development? How to realize the great development of the western region?
