在20世纪20年代的风云变幻中,我国著名爱国将领冯玉祥将军及其所领导的军队,先后两次与焦作煤矿发生联系,积极声援英国福公司焦作煤矿罢工,坚决支持河南人民反对英帝国主义保卫矿权的斗争,至今在焦作煤矿工人中流传为美好的佳话。 焦作是我国古老的煤矿区之一。在1894年中日战争后,英国福公司根据帝国主义在中国取得“开矿设厂”的特权,攫得了“怀庆左右,黄河以北”的煤矿开采权,从而鲸吞了焦作煤矿,成为帝国主义在华投资的七大煤矿之一。到1924年原煤产量达到160多万吨,仅次于开滦、抚顺煤矿,居全国第三位。但是,焦作煤矿工人在英国资本家和封建把头的残酷压迫下,却过着“抬头不见日月,低头难寻出路”的“人间地狱”生活,而蕴藏着炽热的地下革命烈火。
