On October 31, 2009, Yuan Guiren was appointed the new Minister of Education of the People’s Republic of China, taking the place of his predecessor Zhou Ji, who later became the deputy director of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Group in the China Engineering Institute.
Yuan Guiren was the sixth Minister of Education of China. He was born in Anhui in 1950. He spent his whole life in education. When he was 19, he began as a middle school teacher in his hometown. In 1978, Yuan was enrolled by the Philosophy School of Beijing Normal University and graduated from the postgraduate course six years later. After graduation, he became a teacher in Beijing Normal University. In the following years, he took the posts of deputy director of the university’s Academic Affairs Department, deputy headmaster, party secretary and headmaster of this university. In 2001, Yuan was appointed as the Vice Minister of Education.
Yuan Guiren was praised to be a “clever, decent and self-restraint person knowing clearly what he is doing”. Starting from a middle school teacher, he was said to know the defects of the current education system in China. The experience of being a college headmaster made him familiar with the higher education. During his tenure, what changes will the new education minister bring to the Chinese education system?
It is known that Yuan went to many places to listen to the public opinions about the new Program of Middle and Long Term Education Reform and Development before his appointment, which will be issued in the coming future.
