为了研究大卵石推移质采样器的性能,较准确地进行推移质采样器的检定,1978年经水电部批准列为部属重点科研项目的大型试验渠道,于1979年上半年在四川灌县都江堰上游五公里处的白沙河口建成。经过1979年上半年的投产试验,成功地解决了标准砂的采集问题,下半年作了进一步改进,采用分部导流采砂法解决了大流量下标准砂的采集问题。1980年上半年又进行了扩建,建成了一座长100米,宽3米,深1.2米的矩形试验渠
