This article describes a microprocessor-based stepper motor controller. This is ’generic’ because it can be used to control all types of permanent magnet PM and variable reluctance VR stepping motors. The system also serves as a preset indicator, allowing the stepper motor to automatically control its acceleration and deceleration, passing the specified number of steps in the shortest possible time. Stepper motors have been widely used in different applications for more than two decades. Stepper motors require the controller to energize the motor in the proper sequence to allow the motor to step in the desired direction.
