Comrade Hu Qiaomu is an outstanding leader in the Chinese press and a revolutionary predecessor and mentor whom I respect. As early as the Yan’an period, I had just set foot on the road to journalism and got his guidance and teachings. The first time I know the name Hu Qiaomu was in 1938. At that time, I participated in the propaganda work of the 120th Eighth Route Army under the leadership of Comrade Ho Lung, shortly after I joined the revolution. By chance, I read a pamphlet titled “Fifteen Years of Heroic Strive,” signed by the author about the nature, tasks and struggles of the Chinese Communist Party. This thin and concise reading, which made me subject to a relatively systematic education of party history and history, also left a deep impression on the author. I met with Comrade Jomu directly after I arrived in Yenan. In June 1940, I returned to Yan’an from the front line of northwestern Shanxi and entered the department of literature at Luxun Institute of the Arts. In the autumn of 1942, the organization raised me and Comrade Zhang Tiefu to go to the “Liberation Daily” work. I remember the day I arrived at the newspaper office, which was the “September 1” reporter’s day. When he knew that we were a newly assigned young man, we were very happy to talk to both of us specifically. After briefly asking about our situation, Comrade Qiao commented: Journalism in Yanan is a groundbreaking undertaking of proletarian news in our country. It is glorious to dedicate a lifetime to it. The current CPC Central Committee must strengthen its news work and step up its efforts to “liberate.”
