The end of the 1990s was an important turning point for Micron as it realized that manufacturing solely on DRAM was not enough to underpin the company’s growth and as a result, management decided to start a transformation to develop Flash and Industrial Flash and CMOS image sensor. As Micron successfully acquired photobit, a renowned CMOS imaging company, in 2001, Micron began to actively enter the CMOS image sensor market, resulting in a “zero leap.” At present, Micron has a total staff of nearly 22,000 and its sales revenue in 2005 was 4.9 billion U.S. dollars. Photobit, a spinoff from the California Institute of Technology, was considered a pioneer of modern CMOS image sensors and Photobit self-developed CMOS imaging technology in the late 1980s. Micron used Photobit’s patented foundation to develop a large number of current patents by filing extended patent applications. then
