张元先生不仅是极具探索精神的知名画家,同时也是颇受尊重的美术教育家。在创作方面,1984年便创作出在美术界颇具影响力的油画作品《黄河纤夫》、《旅途》,上世纪九十年代转入综合材料艺术的探索和研究,引起学术界的普遍关注,并主持组建了中央美术学院材料艺术工作室。近十年来,他的画风日趋成熟,艺术语言更加精炼,创作出大量既具中国精神又有时代气息的优秀作品。在理论研究方面,他所撰写的《材料与表现》、《艺术材料的遐想——绘画应用的结与解》、《中央美术学院规划教材——油画《教学材料艺术工作室》等对于材料学科建设和理论完善做出了重要贡献。
