According to a report by the US Army Technology Web site, the United States Army will at least reduce the mass of existing combat tanks and infantry combat vehicles by 40% at the recent Tank Quality Science and Technology Working Conference. Experts from REDCOM emphasize that non-traditional technologies and new ideas are needed to achieve quality reduction targets. Dr. Patrick Becker, director of the Weapons and Materials Research Division at the Army Research Laboratory in the United States, points to the need for researchers using new processes and material sciences, materials technology, simulation and manufacturing technologies.
