《申报》在当时来说,是我国发行时间最久、社会影响最著的一份报纸,被称为“近代中文第一报”。在《申报》里,《金瓶梅》的身影不时出现,蕴藏着丰富的学术信息:一是《申报》所载《金瓶梅》的禁毁资料相当丰富,包括官方查禁、舆论营造和民间禁毁等多种形式;二是《申报》所载《金瓶梅》的舞台影响堪称巨大,《金瓶梅》中不光记载了大量的戏曲演出史料,而且小说本身也成为后世戏曲不衰的题材。在晚清民国的剧坛上,《金瓶梅》占据着一席之地,且京剧之外,越剧、蹦蹦戏、花鼓戏等地方剧种,均有与《金瓶梅》相关之剧目。戏曲外,《金瓶梅》还蔓延至电影、舞台剧等;三是《申报》所载《金瓶梅》的出版信息比较全面,可知晚清民国的上海,《金瓶梅》的出版、销售均异常活跃,呈现出出版种类繁多、装帧设计多样、营销书店众多、热度久久持续的特点;四是《申报》所载《金瓶梅》的学术研究空前活跃,具体表现为参与研究的学者阵容强大、涉及的研究领域宽广、现代纸媒营销策略刺激研究开展的同时也带来泥沙俱下的后果。
