黄遵宪从广东梅县抵达北京考中举人后,本可继续登进士、入翰林,做“玉堂金马”人物,可他毅然摆脱科举考试的束缚,远涉重洋,出任清朝驻日使馆参赞、驻美旧金山总领事、驻英使馆参赞、驻新加坡总领事,和外交工作结下了不解之缘。尤其是任驻美旧金山总领事和驻新加坡总领事期间,以随机应变的公关谋略,确保了华侨在海内外的正当权益,和华侨建立了友好亲密的关系,在晚清华侨发展史上写下了光辉的一页。
