The eastern and northern areas of HekouDistrict of Dongying City are surroundedby sea, along which there are rich reservesof bittern, oil, and natural gas. The low beachand alkaline land suitable for developmentare vast. However, over the past s everalyears, the production means on these areashas been limited to low level c ultivation ofshrimp and making salt by evaporating brine.Also, the rapid dev elopment of cultivationindustry has brought about serious offshorepollution, which directly influences the pro-tec tion of the low beach and developmentof the cultivation industry on the low beach.With a view to conserving limited resources,r ed uc in g w as te , a nd pr ot ec t in g th eenvironment, Hekou District has put forwardthe strategy of “building up an ecologicaldistrict.”
