Peripheral lymphocytes from patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) showed significantly more roses than those from HE controls (HEp-2). In contrast, T lymphocytes from MS patients formed less greedy roses (> 10 SRBCs) than lymphocytes from control subjects. Prostaglandin E_1 (PGE_1) increased the adhesion of control lymphocytes to epithelial cells infected with measles virus. Prostaglandin synthesis inhibitor aspirin, whether added to cells in vitro or administered orally to MS patients, can reduce lymphocyte adhesion in MS patients below the levels normally seen in control cells. In contrast to the increased adhesion of control lymphocytes to cells infected with measles virus, PGE 1 reduced the greed of control lymphocytes to sheep erythrocytes (SRBC).
