Homologous box genes are widely found in higher eukaryotes and encode a class of transcriptional regulatory proteins that contain a “homology box” of about 60 amino acid residues in length that is highly conserved across species. Homologous box proteins have DNA-binding activity and are important for the development of individuals and cell differentiation in higher organisms.
