Ots’s work, Them, describes the miserable life of the poor in Detroit from the 1930s to the 1960s and has a one-way relationship with the theme of American naturalistic literature that emerged at the end of the 19th century. However, through the incorporation of other literary forms into his works, Oates greatly expanded the selection of naturalistic literature on the subject matter, thus contributing to the revival and development of naturalistic literature. The language of “them” is vivid and easy to understand. It is very helpful to inspire students to learn how to use English core vocabulary flexibly, and also uses the images associated with characters such as mirrors and fires to form the students’ writing skills A subtle role. Their "reflection on and interpretation of American cultural values provides valuable materials for students to understand the history and current situation in the United States, and plays a catalytic role in cultivating students’ literary accomplishments as well.
