19世纪,在美国广袤的土地上,有太多令人惊叹的奇景没有被生活在阿布拉契亚山脉以东的美国人看到。而那里的人们,渴望看到那些如神谕般的奇景就矗立在离自己生活的城市几百公里远的溪林之中。他们希望在这山水之间看到上帝的印记,看到伊甸园的影子。摄影机在这里成为了打开庸常生活与伊甸园之间联系的窗口。近日在美国国家美术馆举办的摄影展“密西西比河以东:19世纪美国风格摄影”中展出的大多数照片就在那个年代扮演了这样的角色。
In the nineteenth century there were so many amazing wonders on the vast land of the United States that Americans not living east of the Appalachian Mountains were seen. And the people there, eager to see those magical wonders like standing in a stream hundreds of miles away from the city they live in. They hope to see the seal of God among the landscapes and see the shadow of the Garden of Eden. Here the camera is the window that opens the connection between the commonplace and the Garden of Eden. Most of the photographs on display at the National Gallery of Art’s recent photography show “East of the Mississippi: American style photography of the 19th century” played that role in those days.
