I think David Hockney (or, if not him, that) should have called Picasso the greatest artist of the 1960s. Hockney’s recent exhibition at Adriano-Imerich was his most recent, highly visible, bowed tribute to the master. The exhibition took a somewhat sly title: “Some very new paintings.” As we all know, Picasso’s practice is extremely difficult to follow suit. In the 1940s, it would be fair to develop yourself like Gorky by imitating Picasso, but you should never want to get out of your way.
