The fine structure of the butterfly wing scales causes light to refract, diffuse, and diffract, resulting in a variety of colors. This “structural color” is one of the sources of the bright colors of butterflies. Researchers at the National Institute of Materials Science in Japan were inspired to invent a rubber that could change color. They coated the rubber with a layer of nanoparticles. As the rubber is pulled or twisted, the position of the particles changes, which in turn gives the rubber a different color. It’s not just for the sake of cool look than to let the rubber change color! This color-changing rubber has at least three major uses: making children’s toys or decorations
