水稻在本田生育期间,水温、泥温对秧苗的影响比气温更为重要。浅水灌溉不仅可以省水节肥,而且是稻田增温的主要办法之一。据试验,3厘米深的水层比7厘米深水层的稻田昼间水温高1.1~2.0℃,泥温高0.4~1.2℃;水深5厘米比水深7厘米的水温高1.0~1.6℃,泥温高0.3~0.8℃。浅水田虽然夜温比深水田稍低,但其昼间增温效果远远大于深水田,增加昼夜温差可以降低水稻呼吸强度,对水稻生育有利。
