裴休,字公美,河南济源县人,唐长庆年间进士,大中六年(852年)升为同中书平章事,历任昭义、河东、凤翔、荆南节度使等职,官至太尉。大中十三年卒,享年七十四岁。裴休能文善书,《旧唐书》卷一七七载云:“裴休长于书翰,自成笔法。家世奉佛,休尤深于释典。”明董其昌《容台别集》卷三亦云:“唐世学书甚盛,皆不属释典所用。梁肃、房融其书不称。惟裴休深于内典,兼临池之能。”可见,裴休不仅是位政治家,还精通佛教释理,擅长书法。裴休“书楷遒媚·有体法”(《新唐书》卷一八二),率意天成,却又法度严谨。史载:休“镇太原时,太山建化成寺,寺僧粉额陈笔砚以俟休。休神色自若,以
