英国国营铁路花费15年时间研制的APT(先进旅客列车),由于倾摆机构的问题,曾一再推迟试运营的时间。几经挫折之后,终于决定于1981年12月7日至1982年1月11日进行试运营,在格拉斯哥与伦敦之间往返运行三次。 12月7日从格拉斯哥到伦敦的首次运营试验是成功的。645公里的行程只用了4小时14分钟。在布列斯特至伦敦335公里行程中,平均运行速变达165公里/时。在布里斯瓦斯附近,最高运行速度达到220公里/时。在高速通过弯道时,没有因为倾摆造成旅客的不舒适,但是由于车体较轻,在不平顺线路上运行时振动较大,影响了乘座舒适性。
