The pilots of jet fighters will soon have a display system that utilizes a magical technique - holography - to produce three-dimensional images. This Hughes display system consisted of a hologram lens on the driver’s sight hole and a small cathode ray tube mounted on the side of his flying cap. A tiny television image of only about three-fourths of a diameter projects and is reflected by the hologram lens, where a bright image is superimposed on the driver’s field of view. This flying cap-mounted display system, one of the first practical applications of holography, was created by the Cosmic Operational Research Laboratory using a holographic lens invented by the Malibu Laboratory.
