《赤伏符》文本表明,《赤伏符》是道士西门君惠为刘歆所作,目的在鼓动刘歆劫持王莽归降更始,以复兴刘氏。“四七之际”指的是第四个七十年。光武帝刘秀兴起之后,于是人们将刘秀与《赤伏符》联系起来,其将领以此劝其称帝。由于《赤伏符》内容多不合于刘秀称帝时情形,故其登基文中并未征引《赤伏符》原文,只是转述其大意而已。
The text of “Chi Fu Fu” shows that “Chi Fu Fu” was made by Simon Liu, a Taoist priest, for Liu Xin, aiming to encourage Liu Xin to hijack Wang Mang and to rejuvenate Liu. “On the occasion of the Fourth of July” refers to the fourth seventy years. After the rise of Emperor Guangwu, Liu Xiu, people linked Liu Xiu to “Red Volt”, and his generals persuaded them to be emperor. Since the content of “Chi Fu Fu” is mostly incompatible with the case of eminent emperor Liu Xiu, the original text of “Chi Fu Fu” has not been solicited in his essay. It only relies on the slogan.
