When the reinforced concrete structural member is only subjected to a longitudinal tensile force, it is referred to as a tension member. There are two types of tension members (Fig. 1): (a) If the point of application of the longitudinal tensile force is exactly on the centroid of the cross-section of the member and the entire cross-section is subjected only to tensile forces, it is called the central tension member. (b) If the point of application of the longitudinal tensile force deviates from the centroid of the cross-section of the member, the cross-section of the member is considered to be an eccentric tension member, in addition to being subjected to a tensile force and also subjected to a bending moment.
