20世纪三四十年代,上海的文化市场出现了一种新兴的都市中产文类,其中的代表人物张爱玲的作品及其身世在以后的华人社会随都市现代化发展的文化市场一再被挖掘,成为反复上演的张爱玲传奇。1980年代中国文学再度开始了商品化的进程,张爱玲重新浮出水面。1990年代春风文艺出版社的“布老虎”文丛在文化市场率先进行了开发中产阶级读者市场的中产文类尝试。21世纪初经由网络“小资”拥戴而成名的安妮宝贝是中国最为成功的中产文类作家,她的小说提供了城市女性读者对于上层中产阶级生活的想象与向往,在文类位阶上则借鉴了许多纯文学的形式,使得她的小说披上了一层富于精神品位的雅文学的外衣。这正是典型的在高层文化与流行文学之间调和的中额文类的性质。这一中额文类的出现,证明在高层文化和大众文化之间,一个适应都市中产消费者、追求精致品位、意识形态倾向停留于安全地带的文化品类在更加现代化、都市化的中国开始扎下根来。
