台州市路桥区地处温黄平原复地,是典型的江南渔米之乡。随着社会的发展,城市化水平和粮食政策的放开,蔬菜等经济作物品种迅猛发展,至2002年统计,全区衣作物播种面积,稻谷9 448hm~2、豆类1 037hm~2、蔬菜6 755hm~2、瓜类1 357hm~2、甘蔗658hm~2、花卉240hm~2、席草146hm2、饲料草20hm~2、绿肥4 229hm~2,其他700hm~3。蔬菜等经济作物播种面积已经接近粮食播种面积,同稻谷播种面积相仿,如划除豆类(大部鲜食菜用),则蔬菜等经济作物的播种已超过稻谷面积。随着作物种类的变化,对作物品种也提出了更高的要求,对现代农业生产来说,现代农业生产离不开现代化技术,现代化技术必须通过良种才能发挥出应有的
