OBJECTIVE: To determine the sensitivity and specificity of the BED Trap ELISA (BED method) to detect newly infected HIV. Methods: HIV-infected persons who were infected for more than 168 days in Dehong Prefecture of Yunnan Province were considered as “genuine” former HIV-infected persons and those newly infected with “true” HIV-infected persons whose infection time was less than or equal to 168 days The serum samples were detected by BED method. Results: Among the 29 newly infected patients, 24 cases were positive for BED test, the sensitivity was 82.76%. Among 264 cases of previous infection, 218 cases were negative for BED test and the specificity was 82.58%. The longer the infection was, the more the BED was High, while for infection in 169 d ~ 365 d of infection, BED low specificity, false positive rate. Conclusion: The BED method has high sensitivity and specificity in determining newly infected HIV patients, but there is a certain misjudgment rate for some infected patients.
