近代上海对中国社会的意义,不仅仅是建立了一套与中国古代城市完全不同的城市市政建设和管理制度,更重要的是,它在构筑近代城市物质形态的同时,也造就和培养了近代的市民意识。这种市民意识,就是为了适应近代城市生活而发展出来的一套关于公共领域、公共事务的权力与义务。上海市民意识的萌发是上海社会走向近代化的巨大推动力量。
The significance of modern Shanghai to Chinese society is not only to establish a system of urban construction and management that is completely different from that of ancient Chinese cities.
