水稻和其它作物一样,其根系的发育与地上部的生长相互联系,相互依赖,构成一个有机的统一体。在水稻一生中,根系活力具有明显的阶段性,分蘖孕穗期较强,抽穗以后逐渐减弱。据前人试验:水稻在抽穗以后,根的活力对于叶绿素的分解有显著影响,如果根的活力衰退缓慢,则叶绿素的分解也较缓慢,从而延长了叶片的功能期,对于增加产量有明显的作用。所以水稻生育后期地上部早衰与否及其程度和根系的活力大小有密切关系。
