激光(Laser)可用作眼科光凝术光源。光凝术是把辐射光能经瞳孔引入眼内,经屈光间质把光能集中在需要治疗的组织处,转变为热能,使组织凝固而产生治疗效果。1943年Eccles等研究日光造成兔眼烧伤与曝光时间、热量强度的关系。1946年Meyer-Schwickerath利用日光烧伤治疗眼病,又创作氙弧灯作视网膜光凝术。1960年Maiman作出第一台激光器,1960年Collins、1961年Zaret先后用固体激光器作光凝兔眼视网膜试验。1963年以来国外有不少关于激光光凝术动物试验和临床应用的报告。1970年我国杨冠等试制红宝石激光器成功,并应用于临床。
