The effects of carboxylic acids such as formic acid, chloroacetic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid and hexanoic acid on the extraction of europium with benzoyl trifluoroacetone were studied. Since the metal chelate forms an adduct with the carboxylic acid in the organic phase to enhance the extraction, in the aqueous phase, extraction is hindered by the formation of metal complex ions with the anion of the carboxylic acid. Has acted as an organic Lewis base and shows a synergistic effect, but formic acid and chloroacetic acid have a masking effect. Acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid act as synergists in the organic phase, while masking the water phase. Hexanoic acid produces a more stable adduct than n-hexanol, and the composition of this chelate adduct is estimated to be En (BFA) _3.2CH_3 (CH_2) _4COOH.
