我开始对木刻图画发生兴趣是在三十年代的时候。其时既无老师,又无范本,我所能见到的木刻图画是唱本内的木刻绣象和教科书内的插图,以及外文字典内的小型图版。一九三二年这才算看到艺苑朝华社出版的《近代木刻选》。可仍然不得木刻制作的方法,唯一是依照旧刻字铺的办法,开始刻起木刻图画,以后又刻起鲁迅著作《野草》的插图。这套三十多幅的木刻插图是失败的,因为对于诗篇的含义我理解得很浅,刻成后送给鲁迅先生指正,除对“雪”等篇称赞外,其它在复信中并投有提及。因为这插图刻的刀法实在是有些乱,为了纠正我的刀法,鲁迅先生还寄给我一本日本出版的梵高画册,意思是明白的,即不要仿照他的画法,其实我觉得《士敏土之图》的天空的刻法也是受梵高绘画的影响的,后来我逐渐改变了。
