The genetic analysis of heading date, tiller number, plant height, grain yield, grain weight, and grain weight of three grains of four hexagonal barley cultivars was carried out. P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 of each cross were planted in 1982 in Forgo and Prosper, North Dakota, USA, and evaluated. In addition to the number of tillers, the average of the parents within the cross is generally different. The comparison between generations showed that late ear spike was relatively early spike dominant, high grain weight was relatively low grain weight dominant, and grain fullness was affected by additive gene. The relationship between yield and heading stage is inconsistent among hybrids. Positive r values are very low, indicating that the choice of precocious, high yield, full barley lines should be possible. Heterophile at the heading of the hybrid advantage is very close to the hybridization, but no superior pro-parents. At the heading stage, the decline of self-fertility was fairly constant, while the yield was inconsistent. Inconsistent degree of self-fertility decline may be related to environmental variation and genotype differences. The ratio of additive variance to dominant variance at heading date and yield was inconsistent among hybrids. These data suggest that these traits should be selected after F2 generations. At the heading stage, the general heritability varied from 42% to 86%. The consistency of general heritability of grain yield was greater than the heritability of heritability. Because of the lack of additive variation, genetic progression is low.
