Master Planning and Design of Public Spaces In the nineteenth century, many cities were successively connected to the railway, and the city’s appearance also changed. Delft is no exception, where the tracks traverse the downtown defenses and canals. As the rail traffic grew, the local decided to build an elevated viaduct in the 1960s, especially since it would provide more room for increased motor traffic to and from the city center. However, the elevated structure eventually became a huge obstacle between two urban settlements on two sides of the railroad track. It also creates a so-called bottleneck on the major rail lines between Amsterdam and Rotterdam and produces much noise pollution.
