唐开元十八年(730),李邕来到长沙麓山寺瞻仰后,撰写了著名的麓山寺碑的碑文,书写于青石之上,自己刻好立于麓山寺内。麓山寺碑因文采、书法、刻工精湛独到,人称“三绝碑”。其碑字用行楷书写是新创,表现出豪放、奔突、明快乃至荒率的审美情趣。宋代元丰三年(1080),米芾曾专程来麓山寺临摹。李邕用笔、结字主要取法王羲之,以“二王”为基础,其雄肆苍健的气度则得力于北朝碑版。其用笔凌厉雄道,气骨峥嵘,如泰山卓立,转折顿挫,峭拗明快,势方而意圆,凝重厚实又恣肆纵横。麓山寺碑不仅是中国碑刻书法艺术的瑰
